Heating and Energy Assistance


_Avoiding Utility Shutoff – Provides information to help utility customers prevent shutoff. http://www.njcommunityresources.info/utility_shutoff.html

Citizens Energy Oil Heat Program – Provides voucher for the purchase of 100 gallons of heating oil to oil heat customers.  The program serves several states and is limited in funding.  http://www.citizensenergy.com/english/pages/OilHeatProgram

Comfort Partners – Improves energy affordability for income eligible households through direct installation of free energy efficiency measures and education about steps everyone can take to save energy.  http://www.njcleanenergy.com/residential/programs/comfort-partners/comfort-partner

LIHEAP/USF/Weatherization – Provides funding to qualified families and individuals to assist with energy bills and to help reduce the energy burden.  Applications are available November 1 through April 30 each year.  http://www.njcommunityresources.info/njenergy.html

Lifeline Credit – Provides a $225 credit on electric and gas utility bills for income eligible beneficiaries.  The beneficiary must meet the eligibility requirements for PAAD and be a participant in the PAAD program. http://www.state.nj.us/health/seniorbenefits/lifelinedetail.shtml

REHEET – Provides energy audits, healthy homes testing and remediation, structural repairs, insulation and air sealing and community education on energy and home health in the Old Trenton and East Trenton neighborhoods.  http://isles.org/main/services/energy-green-job-training/isles-e4-energy-environment-equity-employment/

TRUE Program – Provides one-time relief for gas and electric bills to moderate income households who are experiencing a temporary financial crisis.  Applicants must not be receiving or have received within the past year, any benefit through the USF or LIHEAP program.  http://www.ahanjtrue.com/

Utility Payment Assistance – Some agencies will provided assistance to individuals who are at risk of utility shut-off.  Funding is limited.  For a list of agencies please see this link:  http://www.senatorturner.com/files/20110104170130580.pdf.

Winter Termination – Protects customers from gas or electric shutoff between November 15 and March 15.  Those enrolled in programs, such as SSI, Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), USF, and Lifeline are protected, in addition to people who are unable to pay their bills because of circumstances beyond their control, including unemployment or illness.  Contact the BPU at 1-800-624-0241.
